Skin Care Tips for Winter

Skin Care Tips for WinterThe winter time means dryer air, colder weather, and often rapidly rising and lowering barometric pressures and other changes for the climate around you.  Your skin is resilient and strong, but these constant fluctuations and low humidity can wreak havoc on your skin's appearance and health.

Everyone your in family can benefit from these simple, common-sense skin care tips for winter.  They should be a part of any household, no matter your location.

Humidity is usually the biggest problem for skin in the winter time.  We tend to keep our doors and windows closed, run our heating systems in the house more, and the air itself tends to be drier this time of year.  So you'll want to use a humidifier to put moisture back into the air in your home.  Whether it's an actual humidifier, a small pot of water hanging in the fireplace, or fancy misters to ad moisture to your central air, humidity is important in the winter.

Moisturize your skin more frequently.  Especially the often-exposed skin such as your face and hands, but all of your skin (head to toe) could use some moisturizer.  This helps your skin keep its natural moisture inside.

Use moisturizing sunscreens, even in the winter.  That's right, sunscreens aren't just for the summer time.  Snow and ice reflect up to 80% of the sun's UV rays.  Sand only reflects 15% of them.  Many people get "snow burn" in the winter time and it's just as painful as sunburns in the summer.  Protect yourself against that.

Wear appropriate clothing and keep yourself covered as much as possible when outdoors.  This is especially true for your hands.  Our hands get a lot of exposure to the elements year-round and in the winter, this can mean extreme cold followed by sudden heat as we leave the weather to enter a warm house or dip them in warm water to "relieve" the cold.  This is very hard on your skin.

Above all, use common sense when you deal with the weather and winter time elements.

Whether you in Florida or Wisconsin, your skin will thank you for taking care of it during the harsher winter months.
